Career E-Sandbox
Exploring the Possibilities for Career Clarity
The Career E-Sandbox is a web application designed to integrate multiple perspectives, give users visibility into possible career paths, and foster self knowledge for long-term career capability.
What Is the Career E-Sandbox?
The Career E-Sandbox takes user inputs and gives users visibility into career paths for their profile. It is designed to guide students by considering their personality and preferences using large language models (LLMs) to process inputs and deliver career suggestions based on users' individual profiles.
Unlike other platforms, it integrates multiple perspectives to build a user's profile and supports interactive exploration of careers. It enables comparison of conflicting recommendations and reasons why careers are recommended or not recommended.
The Problem
Many post-secondary students face uncertainty regarding their current career or program trajectory. This often stems from misalignments related to personality or preferences.
50% - 70%
of students, switch majors at least once.
25%
of graduates, would select a different program.
Effect on Students
Students that follow the wrong career path may experience challenges with:
1. Wasted Time
2. Draining Money
3. Burnout
4. Mental Health
5. Graduating Without a Clear Direction
Our Solution
The Career E-Sandbox is a web application that guides students by considering multiple perspectives including their personality and preferences.
Unlike other platforms, it integrates users' multiple identities, perspectives, and preferences to build a user's profile and supports interactive exploration, transparency, comparison, sense-making, and critical thinking around the reasons that careers are recommended or not recommended.
It is a sandbox (not a test) that focuses on the career exploration problem (not every problem), and it is a path to self knowledge.
Bring the Career E-Sandbox to your students, career services team, or career education program.
Our Approach
1. Designed with a Sandbox Philosophy
A sandbox lets users experiment. Users should be able to change inputs, try different assumptions, compare scenarios, revisit previous explorations, and see what happens when something changes. This makes career exploration more like experimentation than examination.
2. Critical Thinking and AI Literacy
The Career E-Sandbox increases AI literacy by making the mechanics, assumptions, variability, and limitations of AI recommendations visible to users. Rather than positioning AI as an authoritative source that produces the right career, the sandbox lets users experiment with inputs and compare how different systems respond.
3. Structured Environment for Sense-Making
Unlike a career test or a job board, the Career E-Sandbox is infrastructure that supports high-stakes long-term career decision making. It offers a structured environment to make sense of best matches, potential mismatches, adjacent careers, and unexpected careers for more comprehensive exploration.
